ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Year of Establishment: 2004 History of the department: In a first Environmental Studies was introduced in the college as compulsory module in 2004. This was in response to a Supreme Court Order obtained by M.C Mehta in 2003, who had filed a PIL in Supreme Court of India in 1991 regarding introduction of compulsory environmental education in Schools, Colleges and Universities. Since then Environmental Studies is taught as compulsory module in the college and whose syllabus and content is regulated by UGC from time to time. From 2004-2016, department was run by contract faculties under the aegis of Department of Botany. In 2017 our college got the first batch of full time faculty in Environmental Science. In 2018 Department of Environmental science took a big leap by introducing Environmental Science as a core subject at under graduate level and subsequently a laboratory was established in the department to augment teaching. The aim of our department is to develop a the knowledge base about our ecological system and the attitude, motivation and commitment to work individually and collectively towards solutions of current environmental problems and prevention of new ones. Our faculty is actively involved in several community outreach programs. The Department has organized several field trips, webinars/seminars and workshops to raise awareness about various environmental issues.
